SLIDESHOW: PORTRAITS 2013-1017

The last couple of years I have concentrated my artistic efforts to become more skilled in portraiture. In 2013 I enrolled in an art program at Farigh Ghaderi Art Studio, the starting point for my art odyssey. The creative process is not painless. Every time a blank piece of paper or canvas stares at me I have to take a deep breath to dispel the uneasiness I feel. I gaze at the model´s face until my eyes beg for solace, I wrestle with pencil and charcoal, trying to get it right on the paper. It´s a struggle with composition, silhouette, proportions, movement, values and form.

As an aspiring artist I have to work through disbelief and exercise faith in my ability to bring about an honest piece of art.

A great way to exercise your drawing muscles is to do quick portraits, in contrast to the longer portrait sessions in the art studio when you can work over 20 hours on one portrait. This slideshow starts with my awkward portrait of Paul made in 30 minutes. It ends with a charcoal portrait of Hans made over a period of several weeks. Do enjoy all the crooked lines and ridiculous proportions, it´s getting better in the end of the slideshow.
